Uncovered grapes. Don’t think they need to be covered tonight. Not much new elsewise. Rain predicted for tomorrow and Friday. Damn.

Cold. Morning rain.

I uncovered the grapes in the morning and just recently covered them for tonight. Garlic is looking healthy. The dill starts were beat down from all the rain, but are starting to perk back up. There was some standing water in the garden this morning. The trench seems to be keeping the flooding away from the seeds and onion sets.

April 27th 2009

Weather
Expected low of 6 degrees C.
Tomorrow expected to be cold.

Did some weeding and sod chunk removal from the garlic patch. Lots of garlic sprouting up roughtly 1-2″ above the ground. Onions and cucumber areas are still very wet from the weekend rain. Covered grappe vines for fear of dropping temps overnight. Hopefully I won’t have to cover them for too much longer.

now, the pictures i promised y’all

April 24th – April 26th 2009

Judging from the angry demands that I update more, I’ll have a special treat after I copy down my log information. Pictures! Mostly pictures of other things growing around here that aren’t my garden because those are actually something to look at. Not spindly sticks that should be grape vines or a bare patch of tilled earth that I swear has seeds in it. I guess the lesson is that people like to hear more frequently that nothing is happening.

Raining Hard!

My garden is flooded from 2 days of rain. This shit has got to stop! Uncovered grape vines. Will check weather reports to see if I have to cover them again tonight. Doesn’t look like I have to cover them anymore. Had to shovel some small trenches around the garden to drain off the floodwater. Hopefully nothing got ruined.

April 25th 2009

No weather recorded. Substatially colder and raining.

Some garlic sprouts are poking through the ground. Covered grape vines for fear of predicted frost.

April 24th 2009 Arbor Day

Didn’t bother with a weather report.
It was hot and sunny.

Planted red onion sets.
Planted cucumber seeds.
Some noticable buds on the grape vines. Maybe I don’t have to throw them out yet.

Busy day. I didn’t report for 3 days because I did nothing. Today seen a rototiller running and working! Grapes were planted as was the garlic cloves. I have a nifty new device that measures soil pH, light and moisture content. I plan on making a sub category below the weather to record those readings.

Dustin and I tilled all my grape beds and started on a patch for the other crops(approx. 6′x15′) It was a chore just to get the tiller running. I think it needs a name.

Might buy a camera tonight tof more accurate records.

Planted
2 Catawba grape vines
1 Concord grape vines
3 Garlic bulbs separated into cloves (20 or so cloves)

Addem.:
I will also start recording when the weather measurements were taken.

Didn’t touch a thing today. Bought a new air filter for the rototiller and ignition spray. Have to get that son of a bitch running for the weekend.

A Hasty Transcription Of My Notes Thus Far.

In the interest of accuracy and actually learning what works and what doesn’t I fully intend on publishing all of my notes verbatim; the addendums, crossed out lines and scribbles included. I should note that I have never grown any of these crops on my own and have always planted or assisted in planting more traditional garden fare. I’ll also publish these first pages of my handwritten notes in revearse order by date as to not break with the future, daily updates that will likely just be named by the day or holiday. Without further ado:

No improvement noticed on starts in basement. Punctured holes in bottom of grape planters for water drainage(How did i not notice that before!?) Watered.

Bought 2 “Grow-Tubes” and installed them in the fixture closest to the window sill. The blue-ish light they produce is annoying — I hope they help.

Purchases

2 Sylvania Gro-Lux flourescent bulbs. 40 watts.

Turned manure into 3-3′x3′ patches along the driveway for the grape cuttings. Snow is predicted for tomorrow. Will plan on planting next weekend if the soil dries out enough. Sang Magnetic Field songs to my beds, cuttings ans starts: no noticeable effect.

No outside work today due to bad weather. Watered grape vines and dill starts inside. Used Miracle Grow in water, but I suspect too much. (It was too much. 1/2 teaspoon per liter of water) Will not use tomorrow. Change formula to 1/4t per liter of water.

No new growth today.

Addendum

Used store bough water (Aquafina) with the miracle grow. Will soon switch to well water. Possibly install some rain barrels.
